South Korea to open new surface facility for low-level radioactive waste - 동아사이언스

The South Korean government is set to begin operations of a near-surface disposal facility for radioactive waste in Gyeongju this year. This facility will be the second of its kind, following the initial cavern-type disposal facility operational since 2015. The announcement was made during the 12th Nuclear Energy Promotion Commission meeting, where the '3rd Basic Plan for the Management of Low- and Intermediate-Level Radioactive Waste' was approved. This plan outlines a five-year investment of 557.7 billion KRW for the construction and management of disposal facilities, aiming to address the projected accumulation of approximately 420,000 drums of radioactive waste by 2054. The government also plans to expand radwaste inspection and storage capacities, enhance safety measures, and improve technology in radwaste management, including the use of AI and drones. Public communication and support for local communities will also be prioritized under this plan.
